The K-4 steam locomotive No. 1361 left its home in Altoona, Pa.,to make several runs through York County on the infamous Northern Central rail line which, in its heyday, saw such famous passenger trains as The Broadway Limited go through York City and County every day. The engine made five runs over a three-day period on Aug. 26-28, 1988, as part of York City's annual Riverwalk Festival. Thousands of people ran to all areas of the rail line, including remote areas such as cornfields, woods, and creeks to view this magnificent machine pulling old-time passenger cars filled with passengers who had purchased tickets for the ride. Railroad buffs chased the train from crossing to crossing to capture audio, video and still photos. Here are views of the first run taken from an airplane circling overhead. Unfortunately, on Engine 1361's trip back to Altoona after these runs, the engine broke an axle and it is believed that it has not yet been repaired as of the day these photographs were posted on the Web.
